Chapter 8: Dinner on the Roof

Delaney did not go to Kenneth's office.

She stood up out of the wheelchair, dropped the blanket, and walked out of that conference room on her own two feet.

Nobody said a word.

She stopped at the door with her hand on the frame.

"This is a mistake," she said to Kenneth. "You'll want me on your side."

"Security will walk you out," he said. "Your badge is canceled. HR will send the paperwork. The company's reason is falsifying an injury."

"You can't fire a pregnant woman."

"I can fire a person who threw herself down a staircase."

Two guards came in behind him.

Delaney looked once around the room, at thirty people who had believed her an hour ago.

Not one of them would meet her eyes.

"You'll all be sorry," she said, and went with the guards.

A murmur ran through the room.

Then, one by one, people looked at me.

The woman from the next desk got up and came around the table.

"I'm so sorry," she said, her eyes bright. "I believed her. I shared that post."

"It's okay."

"It's not. I'll take it down. I'll tell everyone."

Carson was watching me from the head of the table with a smile that never reached his eyes.

"Well," he said. "That was dramatic."

"It was true," Kenneth said.

"I'm sure she had her reasons."

"She did. She wanted money."

The two cousins looked at each other across the long table.

It was the first time I understood how much they disliked each other.

At six that evening I was packing up my desk when my phone buzzed.

"Dinner," the text said. "Roof. 7:30. I'll understand if you say no. C."
