Chapter 5: Her Mother's Post

I wrote back to Maisie before I had decided what to say.

I'm okay, Mais. I'm not a thief. I love you. Ask Lacey to braid your hair, she knows how.

Then I deleted the part about Lacey, because it might get her in trouble, and sent the rest.

Maisie answered with a string of hearts and a picture of her rabbit.

On Saturday morning Kenzie shook me awake on the couch.

"Don't look at your phone yet," she said, and held out her own.

It was my mother's Facebook page.

She had posted at six in the morning, with a photo of me at fourteen, squinting at the camera in a school sweater.

Our family is heartbroken. Our eighteen-year-old daughter has run away from home and taken money that belongs to this family. We have given her everything. Please pray she comes back to us before she hurts herself or someone else.

Under it were ninety-one comments.

Our neighbor across the street had written: We saw the whole scene on the porch, Marjorie. Terrible. Praying.

My aunt had written: That girl was always ungrateful.

A woman from church had written: Wild what kids do these days with no respect.

Not one person had asked whether the story was true.

I sat on the edge of the couch, and I felt my face get hot.

"I want to answer," I said.

"Then answer," Kenzie said. "But not angry. Make it so plain they can't argue."
