Chapter 16: The Rejection
Aksel looked at Kirsten in the doorway.
Kirsten looked at him.
It had never worked on him once.
"The Ridge," he said. "She said when she was Queen, the King would give me Copper Ridge."
"He's lying," Kirsten said.
"All I had to do was get your wife down here and keep her talking till four."
"Magnus, he's lying. He's drunk. Smell him."
"I've had one glass," Aksel said, insulted. "Out of your bottle."
The woman in green took a step back from my sister.
Then she took another, until she was standing beside Tilde.
Behind her, the three Alphas' wives looked at each other and did the same.
Kirsten's mother put her hand on Kirsten's arm.
"Come away, baby," she said. "Come on."
Magnus still hadn't looked at my sister.
"Take him to the gate," he told the Beta.
"If he comes back up my drive, he goes down it in a sack."
The Beta took Aksel by the collar.
Magnus turned to the Alphas' wives.
"You came down here to see something," he said. "You saw it. Tell your husbands before moonrise."
