Chapter 11: Wren

Hannah's POV

I had the number memorized before I reached the bench.

Jonas was already sitting at his end with the thermos open, and he looked up as I came down the gravel.

"Twenty-five D R eleven forty-two," I said.

He put down the cup.

"That's a case number."

"It's the case number. Dylan was served Monday. The court stamped it Tuesday." I stood in front of him with my hands in my coat pockets. "You said come back with one."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he looked at the plate on the back of the bench, at the name he had polished a hundred times, and back at me.

"I said I'd answer with something besides my hands in my pockets," he said.

"I know what you said."

"My truck's by the gate."

We didn't speak on the drive.

He lives in a small brick house in Oakwood with a porch he built himself and a kitchen full of cedar shavings.

He opened the door and stepped back to let me in first.

I walked into his kitchen, and he shut the door behind us, and I heard the lock turn.

That was the only sound.

Then he had me against the wall beside the refrigerator, with one big hand flat on the plaster by my head and his mouth on mine.

I had forgotten what it was to be kissed by someone who wanted it.

He had waited eleven months, and he kissed me with all of it.

I got both hands into his shirt and dragged him closer.

He made a sound low in his chest, and the whole length of him pressed against me, hard and warm.

"Hannah," he said against my mouth.

"Don't stop."

"I'm not going to." He pulled back an inch, breathing hard. "Say it plain, Hannah."

"I have been sure since the splinter." I took his face in both hands. "I want you to fuck me. Now. In whatever room you've got."
