Chapter 14: Every Date

Beth Lowe's kitchen smelled of coffee and of bacon she had made for nobody.

I had slept on my father's couch, and I had come at ten exactly.

She let me in without a word and pointed to a chair at the table.

There was a yellow legal pad in front of it, and a pen.

"You write the dates," Beth said. "I'll ask the questions."

She sat across from me in her scrubs, with her forearms on the table and her jaw set.

Hannah's coat hung on the hook by the stairs.

I did not look at the stairs.

"When did it start?" Beth said.

"January, two years ago. The second Tuesday."

"Where?"

"The Residence Inn on Dorothy Lane. Then her apartment in Kettering."

"Write it."

I wrote it.

She asked about the Christmas party that year.

I wrote that Bailey had ridden home with me in the Mercedes, and I had dropped her at the corner.

She asked about Hannah's twenty-week scan in February.

"I didn't go," I said. "I told her a customer was waiting."

"Where were you?"

"Kettering."

"Write it."

My handwriting got worse as the page filled.

She asked about the night.

She made me say the whole of that night.

I gave her the time I left, the lie I told in the hallway, the phone on the charger and the sleep.

When I stopped, she did not speak for a while.

"You want to know what I did that Friday?" she said.

"Yes."

"I called the hotel association in Cleveland. I told them I was your assistant and asked for your conference badge."

Her voice was flat.
