Chapter 7: The Lab That Closed
Ronan did not ask me what Chester had said.
I did not ask him about his father.
We drove back to the house without a word, and I went to bed with a rifle on the floor and the door locked.
I did not sleep.
The Compact luncheon was at noon on Wednesday.
It is held at the Kearney house, in the long dining room with the harbor windows, and every family sends its envoy.
The Benedetti envoy came, and the Orlov man in gray, and Chester.
Chester has a seat because every ship in Port Merrow needs a pilot, and nobody argues with the man who brings them in.
He sat at the far end of the table with his cap on his knee.
He nodded to me.
I did not nod back.
Savannah came in last.
She wore white again, and her hair was perfect, and she had the look of a girl who had been told what to do and had decided to like it.
Sean sat at the head of the table with his hands folded.
He had let her come, because the Compact would have noticed if she did not.
"Gentlemen," he said. "We are here to prepare for tomorrow's vote."
"Papa," said Savannah. "Before we begin, I have something I need to share."
She stood.
She took a long cream envelope out of her handbag.
"This came by courier this morning," she said. "From a laboratory. I paid for a private test so that no one could say it was rigged."
She opened it slowly, with a lot of care, and she looked around the table to make sure everybody was watching.
"I had my sample tested against Papa's from the family file, and I had this woman's sample tested too. It is a very serious letter."
She cleared her throat.
"Dear Mr. Kearney. The result is as follows. Savannah Kearney, probability of parentage, ninety-nine point nine percent. Erin Calloran, probability of parentage, zero."
