Chapter 17: Box Office

Ward picked the phone up off the pillow and took it off speaker.

Then he looked at me and put it back on.

"Nothing about you without you," he said.

"Thank you."

"Tell the investor no," he said to the general manager. "Tell Bettina no. Tell the whole producing team."

"Ward, he wants to hear it to your face. He's coming to the theater at one."

"Then he'll hear it at one."

He hung up and looked at the ceiling.

"Four million dollars," I said.

"I heard."

"You could take it. I'd understand. It's your house on the line."

"It's your show," he said. "And it's her part. She earned it in the middle of act two with twelve hundred people screaming."

At ten to one the lobby of the Stanton was full.

The matinee line ran from the box office windows out the brass doors and down 46th Street.

Half of them were holding their phones up with the clip of the girl from Baltimore singing under the bridge.

I came up from the house in my blacks with my headset around my neck. Ward came beside me.

The investor was standing under the gold chandelier in a cashmere scarf, sixty or so, with a face like a closed bank.
