Chapter 14: Not Forgiven Yet

Katie's POV

"Christmas," Devin said.

He didn't look at me. He looked at the water.

"You were twenty-one. You fell asleep on the couch with a library book on your face, and your mother and I came in with the dishes."

"That's it?"

"Your sock had a hole in the toe. You'd wedged it into the cushion to keep it warm, and you were drooling a little."

I laughed before I could stop it.

"I stood there holding a stack of plates," he said, "and I thought, I want to be the person she wakes up next to. I went and washed every dish in the house so I wouldn't think it again."

"Did it work?"

"For about a month."

I pulled my feet out of the water and let them dry in the sun.

It was my turn, and I had been dreading it for three days.

"I stopped answering your texts because of you," I said.

"What did I do?"

"Nothing. You were nice." I picked at the edge of the board. "I was twenty, and I'd started waiting for them. I'd hear the phone buzz in a lecture and hope it was you."

His head turned slowly.

"It scared me," I said. "You were my mother's husband, so I stopped, and I told myself the feeling would stop with it."

"Did it?"

"No."

We sat there with that for a while.

Then I stood up and brushed off my shorts.

"I'm not forgiving you today," I said. "I want that clear."

"All right."

"You lied to me for eleven weeks. You don't get to be forgiven because it was a good lie."

"I know."

"So here's what you're going to do."

I held out my hand for his phone.

He gave it to me without asking why, and I scrolled to the number I'd seen on the lawyer's letter and gave it back.
