Chapter 18: The Date on the Page

My grandmother arrived at eight on Saturday morning, in her church coat, with a covered dish in both hands.

She is seventy-four and five feet tall, and she has never once been late.

I opened the front door before she could knock.

"Kathleen," she said.

Nobody else calls me that.

"Hi, Grandma."

"I brought a coffee cake." She held out the dish and didn't let go of it. "Your mother called me last night."

"I know."

"She cried for an hour."

"I know that too."

"She says you took her husband."

My grandmother looked past me into the hall. Devin was standing at the end of it with his hands at his sides, a clean shirt on and his jaw set.

"Morning, Mrs. Carrow," he said.

She didn't answer him.

"May I come in," she said to me. It wasn't a question.

"Yes."

I took the dish and led her into the kitchen, and she sat at the table and folded her hands in front of her purse.

She looked very small in that big room, and she did not look soft.

"Tell me what Renee said," I said. "I'd like to hear her version."

"She said that you've been carrying on with Devin all summer, while she was away working. She said she came home and found you in the house in his shirt." Grandma's mouth thinned. "She said he's been at this for a year, that she left him to save her sanity, and that you've been poisoned against her."
