Chapter 4: Sign by Friday

Craig made breakfast himself on Thursday, which he had not done in two years.

He set a plate of eggs in front of me and a cup of coffee, decaf, and sat down at my elbow.

"Look at you," he said. "You've got color."

"I slept," I said.

I had slept three hours.

Eli ate his toast across from me, swinging his feet. Britt stood at the counter packing his lunch, humming that same tune.

I had begun to hate the tune.

"Jo, I need your help with something boring," Craig said.

He pulled a folder from under his arm and opened it beside my eggs.

"The bank wants to refinance the house," he said. "Lower rate. It'll save us nine hundred a month, and Lord knows we need it with the hospital bills."

"We have insurance."

"Not for everything, babe. Here, sign on the flags. I've marked them."

The pages were thick. There were small yellow sticky flags where my name went, six of them, all the way down.

I picked up the first page.

"Don't strain yourself reading it," Craig said, light. "It's all legal language. Dorothea says you're too worn out for paperwork."

"Dorothea said that?"

"She worries about you."

He put a pen in my hand.

It was the good pen, the one my mother gave him the Christmas we got engaged.

I held it over the first flag and made my hand shake.

It wasn't hard. It had been shaking for two days.
