Chapter 10: Clause Nine
The chairman took the leather folder from Camille and opened it.
He put on his glasses and read the page marked nine.
"If my daughter Bianca abandons her marriage and the marital home in front of witnesses," he read, "her voting interest in Kingsley Harbor Group passes to her closest named friend."
"The friend shall hold it for a term of one year."
He lowered the page.
"The named friend is listed at the bottom of the schedule."
"Read it," Camille said gently.
"Camille Dorsey."
Nobody breathed.
I looked at Tommaso.
He was holding his own copy of the deed in both hands, and the color had left his face.
"It is real," he said quietly. "It is your father's language and your father's seal."
"My father never told me."
"Your father wrote it when you were twenty," Tommaso said. "You had just introduced him to your best friend. He wanted someone to hold your shares if a husband tried to take them from you."
My father had sat across a restaurant table from Camille, and he had liked her.
He had named her the person who would protect me.
I turned to look at her.
She was folding her hands on the table, with pearls at her throat.
"Your father was a wise man," she said. "He knew I loved you."
"You never told me."
