Chapter 13: Denied With Prejudice
The hearing was set for Monday at nine, in a courtroom with wood benches and a clock that ran two minutes slow.
Camille sat at the petitioner's table in a grey dress and no jewelry.
She had dressed to look like a woman who was frightened for a friend.
Her lawyer was a smooth man in a navy suit, and he stood up first.
"Your Honor, my client is not here to punish anyone. She is here because Mrs. Kingsley collapsed in public, left her home in the night, and signed nothing since."
"Ferraro," I said from my seat. "My name is Ferraro."
The judge looked at me over her glasses.
"You'll have your turn, Ms. Ferraro."
The lawyer lifted a paper.
"This is a statement from a physician who treated her on the night of the party. Hysteria, panic and paranoid accusations. We ask for a guardian over her financial interests until she recovers."
Camille dabbed her eye with a folded tissue.
My mother, beside me, did not move.
Tommaso stood when the judge nodded at us.
"Your Honor, the physician named in that statement has no license in New York. He is a dental surgeon in New Jersey who bills out of a rented office."
The lawyer's head turned.
"He was recommended by a friend of the family," he said.
"Which friend?" asked the judge.
He looked at his client.
Camille kept dabbing.
"I'll answer that," I said. "May I?"
The judge nodded.
"The night of the party I was treated by an emergency doctor at the hospital on West Fifty-Seventh. She is in the gallery. Her chart says burn, second degree, patient calm and oriented."
