Chapter 7: The Clip

I slept four hours on Gwen's couch under a quilt that smelled like her dryer sheets.

At seven I woke to Gwen standing over me with her phone held out at arm's length.

"Don't read the comments," she said. "Read the video first, and then don't read the comments."

It had been posted at two in the morning from Diana's account.

It was me in the hospital parking lot, and the camera sat low and tilted, propped on a car dashboard.

Diana held her checkbook, and her voice was soft and kind.

"It's only an apology. You lose nothing."

On the screen my face looked frightened and hungry.

I could see myself weighing the offer, and the clip ended there.

It had been cut before I said that I would not apologize.

Over it Diana had written: [I only wanted to help Russell's wife when her mother was sick. She told me she'd do anything for his money. I am heartbroken.]

Three hundred thousand people had watched it.

I sat on the edge of the couch and watched myself want her money a second time.

"She filmed you," Gwen said. "She planned it before she said hello."

"She planned it before she opened her purse."

My phone had been dead since the night before, so I plugged it in and found nine emails.

Two of them came from my two biggest design clients.

Both were polite and short, and both said they were pausing our work while the situation was clarified.

The third was from the bank.
