Chapter 5: The Kitchen Table
My brother brought a lawyer to dinner.
He said it was a coincidence, and that he had only invited Ben because Ben was hungry.
Ben Tolland came through the kitchen door at six with a leather folder under one arm and a loaf of bread under the other.
He was my brother's friend from college, a tall man with dark blond hair and a navy suit that had been through a long day.
I had met him twice, at a wedding and at a funeral.
"Hannah," he said. "I'm sorry about all of it."
"Thanks for coming."
"Your brother said you needed someone who would read the whole file."
"He said that?"
"He said it twice, and then he told me about the porch." He set the bread on the counter. "I'm family law, mostly. I don't do flashy. I do paper, and I do it carefully."
"That's what I need."
He looked at me and nodded once, and he did not say anything about my stomach.
I liked him for that.
Maddie came down the stairs in her socks and stopped at the bottom.
"Who's that?"
"This is Mr. Tolland," I said. "He's a friend of Uncle's. He's helping us with some grown-up stuff."
"Are you a lawyer?"
"Yes," Ben said.
"Do you wear a wig?"
"Only on Fridays."
She considered that.
"That's a lie."
"It is," he agreed. "Do you draw?"
"How do you know?"
"Your thumb's got pencil on it."
She looked at her hand, and then she went to the table and sat down across from him, which she had not done for anyone since Halloween.
