Chapter 4: Wellness Check

All the way down the gravel lane I heard Pippa saying it again: I asked Dad for the schedule.

I had no answer for it, so I let the truck's tires fill the silence.

The carriage house sat behind Abraham's workshop at the end of the lane.

It was one room and a bathroom, with a woodstove, a quilt on the bed, and a window over a long sunlit yard.

Abraham set the cedar chest at the foot of the bed.

He set my grandmother's sewing machine on the table by the window.

Then he stood in the door with his hands in his pockets, and I understood he was waiting for me to say what I needed.

"I have some rules," I said.

"Okay."

"I pay full rent on the first of every month. No discount."

"Okay."

"You don't fix anything in here unless I ask you to fix it."

His jaw moved a little.

"There's a loose step on the porch," he said.

"Then I'll ask you to fix it, when I'm ready to ask you."

"Okay."

"And I don't want pity," I said. "Not from you, not from Roz, not from the people on that lawn. If I'm going to be a mess, I'll be a mess on my own time."

Abraham looked at me for a long moment.

"You can be a mess on your own time," he said. "I'll keep out of the way of it."

That was the whole agreement.

He nodded and left, and I heard him cross the gravel and go into the workshop.
