Chapter 11: The Last to Know

Keith's POV

At eleven that night I was alone in the pool office, putting a hundred and eight slides back on a flash drive.

I had not planned to keep them.

I kept them anyway.

The banquet hall had emptied in an hour.

Parents had hugged their kids harder than usual on the way out, and three of them had stopped to tell me they'd noticed Dalton leaving early all summer.

Nobody noticed until somebody lit the screen.

I knew that feeling.

My wife and my assistant coach had spent two years being very helpful to each other.

I was the last person at our swim club to find out, and the whole team knew before I did.

I had sat in an empty bleacher that night, much like this one, and listened to the filters hum.

The side door banged open.

Dalton walked in, soaked from the drizzle outside, with his tie pulled loose.

"I need my keys."

"They're in my desk."

"I need them to get into my office."

"Your office is a closet with your name on it. It's locked until Monday."

"My whistle is in there."

"I'll mail you a whistle."

He stood there dripping on my floor.

He had cried an hour ago, and his eyes still showed it, but he had put his coach's face on again over the top.

"Let's talk like men," he said. "Her stunt tonight was out of line."
