Chapter 7: The Baby Shower

On Saturday morning the lounge on the second floor was full of yellow balloons.

A banner across the fireplace said WELCOME BABY.

There was a table of pastries and a pile of wrapped gifts. A cake in the shape of a crib sat in the middle.

Grady had paid for all of it.

I stood in the doorway in a clean dress with Keaton beside me.

"Residents only," he murmured. "Technically you're my guest."

"Technically I live here."

"Technically." He pressed a hand to the small of my back and let go. "Go get them."

About thirty neighbors stood around the room with plates.

Summer sat in a high-backed chair at the center in a lemon dress. Her hand rested on her stomach and she smiled at everyone who came to say hello.

When she saw me, her smile didn't move.

Grady stepped up to the fireplace and tapped a glass.

"Thank you all for coming. Summer and I have been friends since we were seven." He smiled at her. "She's been through something hard this year. I'm glad she has a home here. A family."

There was soft applause.

I put my plate down.

"I have a question."

Grady's smile stayed on his face, but his eyes changed.

"Claire. Not now."

"It's a quick one." I walked to the cake. "The nursery was built while I was out of town. Summer moved in last week because she had an emergency. That's the story, right?"

Summer's eyes shone.

"Claire, please."

"Then why was the crib ordered six weeks ago?"

I took the slip out of my pocket and held it up.

The room went still.

The woman from apartment twelve with the stroller stepped forward.

"I saw it taped to that crib in the lobby. It said six weeks."
