Chapter 5: Heartbeat

The technician moved the wand across my stomach, and the room filled with a fast, wet, galloping sound.

Macy grabbed my hand so hard that my knuckles cracked.

"That's it?" she whispered. "That's a person?"

"That's a person."

"It sounds like a horse."

"It's a hundred and sixty beats a minute," the technician said, smiling at the screen. "That's perfectly healthy. You're eleven weeks and two days."

On the monitor, a small white shape stretched out one arm.

Macy made a noise I'd never heard her make.

She was crying, and she was trying to hide it behind her lanyard.

"I'm going to be so bad at being an aunt," she said.

"You're going to be great."

"I'm going to teach it swear words."

"Not the first year."

"Fine. The second."

The technician printed three pictures and slid them into an envelope.

I tucked it inside my bag, beside the report that had already traveled to an island and back.

I had told Macy in the car on the way over.

She'd pulled into a pharmacy lot and screamed into her own steering wheel for a full minute, and then she had asked me one question.

"Does he know?"

"No."

"Good," she'd said. "Keep it that way."

We took the elevator down to the cafeteria at Lakeshore General, because Macy said a woman who had just heard her baby's heart deserved a muffin the size of her head.

The place was half empty.

I carried the tray, and she carried our coffee and my decaf tea.

We had just sat down when I heard someone say, "Hannah?"

He was standing by the register in navy scrubs, a stethoscope around his neck, holding a sandwich.
