Chapter 10: The Grovel Dinner

Rupert's invitation came on Saturday morning, in a text, with a restaurant name and a time.

"One dinner. Just us. I want to tell you everything. Please."

I read it twice at the kitchen counter in Rowan's studio, with my tea going cold.

Rowan was kneading bread at the steel table, and he had not said ten words to me since Friday.

"He wants me to listen," I said. "So I'll let him talk."

He looked up.

"He's never told me the truth once," I said. "But he can't tell a lie without adding something to it. If I give him a whole dinner, he'll hand me something."

"Your mother-in-law will have rehearsed him."

"Then I'll record the rehearsal."

Rowan wiped his hands, went out front, and came back with a small black recorder the size of a lipstick.

He pressed it into my palm, and I felt how careful his fingers were not to touch mine.

"The clip goes inside your bag strap," he said. "Eight hours of battery. I'll be outside in the van with the engine off."

"Why?"

"If you walk out, I'll be there. If you don't, I'll leave."

"I haven't forgiven you," I said.

"I know."

"This is business. You hold the equipment, I hold the grudge."

"That's fair," said Rowan, and went back to the bread.

The restaurant Rupert had chosen was on the lake, with white tablecloths and a view of the water going dark.

He was already at a corner table when I arrived.
