Chapter 15: Interference

I read the letter standing at the front desk, between a patient in a bib and a tray of fluoride trays.

Kessling Flooring said I had "induced a vulnerable employee to disclose confidential matters" and "interfered with a family company."

The vulnerable employee was Brooke.

The confidential matter was the saline.

Under the letter was a draft order.

It would forbid me to contact any Kessling, any employee, or any "associate of the company."

My phone buzzed on the desk.

It was Rowan, and the text said: Your coat is still on my floor. Also, I'm not sorry. Eat something.

I put my thumb over the screen, because my face had gone hot in front of my receptionist.

For one second I was back on the green quilt with his mouth on my thigh.

Then I took the letter to my lawyer at lunch.

She read it with her white braid over one shoulder and her mouth in a flat line.

"It's a bluff," she said. "They want you scared of a judge and quiet about Brooke. A company can't sue a woman for hearing a true thing."

"Can they stop me talking to her?"

"Not unless a judge says so, and no judge will, once he hears the word saline." She uncapped a pen. "But we stop waiting. Your husband's mother filed first, and she lost. You file now."

"For what?"

"For divorce on your terms, the house split in half, and your mother's forty-eight thousand back with interest."

"Fran said you'd say that."

"Fran is a sensible woman." She slid a form across the desk. "Sign where it's yellow."

I signed in six places.

The pen shook a little in the first one, and not at all in the last.

That afternoon a courier walked the new petition across town to the Kessling Flooring building and made a clerk sign for it.
