Chapter 9: Three Days

I went down the narrow stairs at eleven o'clock at night with my laptop open in both arms.

A light was on in the back of the studio, in the little kitchen behind the counter.

Rowan stood at a steel table, folding dough with floury hands.

He looked up and saw my face and put the dough down.

"October eleventh," I said.

He didn't ask what I meant.

"The photos were taken on the eleventh," I said. "I got them on the fourteenth. That's three days."

"Yes."

"You told me in that studio that you sent them because you didn't know another way. You never said when you took them."

"No."

"What did you do for three days?"

"Nothing," Rowan said. "That's what I'm ashamed of."

He wiped his hands on a towel, slowly, and I made myself keep standing.

"Wednesday was the shoot. Your husband knelt down in front of her and kissed her stomach, and I said something about the light. I took the pictures. I do that for a living." He put the towel down. "That night I looked at them at home and saw his ring. The reminder on his phone said anniversary dinner, Saturday at seven. I didn't send anything until Saturday, because I wasn't sure I had the right."

"The right."

"I didn't know you. I didn't know whether you already knew and had made your peace with it." His voice was very even. "I told myself it wasn't my business. I told myself that for three days."
