Chapter 15: The Bus Stop

Jonas's POV

I found her asleep in the recliner beside the box at one in the morning.

She still wore her coat. Her hand lay on the plastic rim, the fingers curled around nothing.

Inside, her daughter slept with a hat over one eyebrow.

The night nurse looked at me over her glasses and then at the lamp, which burned right over Piper's face.

"She won't let us dim it," the nurse whispered. "Says she'll miss something."

"I'll do it."

"You're not family."

"No, ma'am."

She let me anyway.

I reached up and clicked the lamp off, and the unit went down to the blue glow of the monitors.

Piper didn't move.

I stood there longer than I had a reason to.

I had meant to leave a sandwich on the arm of the chair and go.

"Jonas?"

Her eyes were open.

"Go back to sleep," I said.

"Why are you still here?"

I had an answer ready, something about the shift schedule.

I didn't use it.

"I was a minute late," I said. "On Thanksgiving."

She sat up slowly.

"I came off the ramp, and your husband's taillights were already going out under the awning. If I'd been sixty seconds sooner, I'd have put my cruiser across that lane."

"You couldn't have known."

"I know I couldn't. I've done the minute over four hundred times, and it still comes out the same."

I kept my voice low, so I wouldn't wake the baby.
