Chapter 19: The Founders' Dinner
The Founders' Dinner was in the Grand Ballroom of the Aldous Hotel.
I had carried trays across that carpet at twenty-three, in black shoes that pinched.
Tonight I walked across it in green silk, with my hand in Nelson's arm and the other in my pocket.
Three hundred guests turned in their chairs.
I heard the whisper run along the tables.
"That's her."
"That's the boy's mother."
"I read she turned down fifty thousand."
I kept my chin level and did not hurry.
The head table sat on a low dais under a chandelier, with a white cloth and a card at every place.
Eugene was in the center in a black tie, with his cane hooked on the chair back.
Two seats to his left sat my mother.
She wore a blue gown with sequins down the front, a size too small.
I could see a price tag poking from the seam at her waist.
Her gold earrings swung when she turned.
Beside her, in cream silk, with a fresh glass of white wine, sat Brooke.
