Chapter 20: Endorsement
The first slide was a bank check, blown up to the size of a barn door.
It was a cashier's check for $38,000, made out to Mona Kessing.
In the memo line, someone had typed: "Surgery, Mrs. L. Kessing."
My mother leaned back in her chair, and her sequins caught the light.
"That's private," she said, to nobody. "That's a private matter."
The second slide was the back of the same check.
A stamp from a bank covered the top, dated four days after the gala.
Under it ran a line of blue ink, a signature with crossed T's.
Mona Kessing.
A murmur ran through the ballroom, and it was not friendly.
"Mrs. Kessing," Eugene said into the microphone, mildly. "You told this table a few minutes ago that this was a settlement."
"It was a settlement."
"Would you read us the name on the endorsement line?"
"I don't have my glasses."
"I'll wait," Eugene said.
The screen glowed over her face, and three hundred people waited with him.
Nelson sat beside me without moving, and I could hear him breathing.
