Chapter 22: Training
The aunt stopped spooning broth.
Tobiah's mother put her hand over her mouth.
Kell looked at the healer for a long moment. Then he nodded, once.
"Then we'd better get it," he said.
He stood up off the stool, and turned around, and saw my face.
"Willa."
"I'm fine."
"You're not fine. You're holding your knife."
I looked down. I was.
I put it back in my belt, and he took my hand, and that was all, in front of everybody.
The healer got up with her stick.
"Win," she said to me on the way out. "Don't make me come down here and bury him in this ground. It's very hard."
The next morning the old hunter took us down to the river gorge.
A long crack in the rock, forty feet deep, with ice at the bottom.
"Old Frost will run you into a ravine," the old man said. "He always does. It's how he took my arm. So you'll learn to cross one."
Kell and I strung a rope across the gorge between two pines.
We crossed it hand over hand with our boots locked over the line, again and again, until my arms shook.
