Chapter 4: The Line

The north line is a cattle fence and a gravel road.

That morning a hundred wolves stood along both sides of it.

Colt had brought forty from Ironwood.

Jonas had brought sixty from Black Creek, and I walked out beside him with my braid wet and a bruise coming up on my cheek.

My brother saw the bruise before he saw anything else.

"Who did that to you?" he said.

"A Black Creek wolf. In a fair trial, in front of everyone. I won."

"Come home, Roxy."

He had changed out of the ceremonial jacket into a plain coat, and he had not slept.

Cassia stood at his shoulder in her cream cardigan.

Orrin stood behind them both, leaning on his bad leg.

"Last night was a lot," Colt said. "Dad's sick and I'm new. Nobody should say things in front of the whole pack that they can't take back."

"I meant all of it."

"Then come home and mean it there. We'll talk. I'll put it in writing."

"Put what in writing?"

"Whatever you want."

Cassia stepped forward and took my hand.

Her fingers were warm and her face was wet.

"Roxana, please," she said. "I know I handled it badly. I should have asked you what you wanted before I took the tubes. We're family. Nobody here wants you gone."

Everyone could hear her.

It was perfectly done.

If I said no now, I was the one breaking a family apart in front of two packs.

"Where are the maps, then?" I said.
