Chapter 11: Interviews

At 7:58 on Tuesday morning I sat in a small windowless room with a pot of tea and Judith Orr.

She poured me a cup before she poured her own.

"I'll ask one question at a time," she said.

"Take as long as you like, and tell me if you want one repeated."

"Okay."

"Question one."

She uncapped the pen.

"Yesterday, in the lobby, Mr. Linwood said something to you about a report. What was the exact word he used?"

"Report."

"And at that point, had anyone outside this building been told a report existed?"

"Not by me."

"Thank you."

She wrote one line.

I thought of the second report, whatever it said, and sat very straight.

"Question two. Who have you told about the night at the Drayton?"

"Gwen. My roommate. She's an ER nurse. She knew before I got home."

"Anyone else?"

"The board, on Saturday. And Mr. Maddox."

"Is that the whole list?"

"Yes."

"Question three."

She turned a page.

"I have a second report. It arrived yesterday at 3:51 p.m."

"It includes a short video of the lobby, edited to start the moment you raised your voice. It alleges you threatened a client contact."

"Thirty people saw the whole thing," I said.

"The receptionist watched him offer me a deal. He was holding two coffees."
