Chapter 23: Conflict of Interest
Elliot called Judith back with me still in his lap.
He put her on speaker and set the phone on the drafting table between two sketches.
"Mr. Albright wants your seat," Judith said, with no hello.
"The vote is Monday at ten. If you give me nothing, I can't save it."
"I'm not going to give her nothing," Elliot said.
"Then give me something I can hold up."
I slid off his knee and pulled on his sweater, because it was the closest thing.
I went to the window and looked at the laundromat sign pulsing pink on the wet street.
"Judith," I said.
"Felicity. I wondered if you were there."
"What does the clause want?"
"You know what it wants. The board has been told."
"Then what does it say about a vendor?"
A pause, and the scratch of a nib on paper.
"A vendor is a contract," Judith said. "A contract needs a second signature."
"And a third, if it's personal."
"Yes. Why?"
