Chapter 19: The Doctor at the Door
Mitchell drove across the bridge faster than I had ever seen him drive.
I clipped Meghan's black pen to my collar on the way and thumbed the little green light on.
"Whatever she says," I told him, "let her say all of it."
"I'm not sure I can stand there."
"Then stand in the door."
He parked on my old street with two wheels on the curb.
The apartment was on the third floor, and the door was open.
Constance sat on our secondhand couch in her cream suit, with her handbag on her knees and her ankles crossed.
Meghan stood by the window with her arms wrapped around herself.
An airline envelope lay on the coffee table between them.
"Lana," said Constance, as if I'd come in late for tea. "Sit down."
"I'll stand."
"As you like."
She lifted the envelope and held it toward Meghan.
"A one-way ticket to Phoenix, my dear, for tomorrow morning. A job is waiting. A small apartment. You will leave tonight, and the matter of your ninety-one thousand dollars will be forgotten."
Meghan looked at the envelope.
She looked at me.
I did not say a word.
This was hers to decide, and I would not take it from her.
"And if I stay?" Meghan said.
"Then the transfer is called back on Monday." Constance smiled kindly. "It was a gift made to an employee. Employees can be dismissed, and gifts can be recalled."
Meghan's chin shook.
"I quit," she said.
"Quitting does not matter."
"Then I'll owe it." Meghan walked forward, took the envelope out of Constance's hand, and tore it in half. "I'll owe it in public. I'll owe it on the news."
She dropped the pieces on the rug.
Constance watched them fall.
"You have your mother's stubbornness," she said to me, without looking up. "I hope you appreciate that I'm only trying to save you from it."
