Chapter 22: Last Night in the Tent
The party ended at eleven, with the guitar put away and thirty students gone down the hill to the lower meadow to pack.
Perry and Blaine came back to the tent holding hands, in plain view, past the cook shelter.
Dad was waiting outside the flap with his pillow under his arm.
"The bench is hard," he said. "I'm sixty-one. I'd like my cot."
"Dad," Perry said.
"I know what I said about earplugs."
"We can't, with you in there."
"You have for ten days." Dad stepped into the tent and began unfolding the cot against the far wall, with his back to them and great concentration. "I'd say I'm acclimatized."
Blaine made a noise somewhere between a cough and a laugh.
They lay down on the bedroll side by side under the one thin sheet, which had by now seen a great deal.
Dad lay down on his cot, pulled his blanket to his chin and sighed.
For a time nobody said anything.
The tent smelled of canvas and woodsmoke and, faintly, of calamine.
