Chapter 10: The Report
A suspended S-rank hunter does not know what to do with his hands.
For nine days Ji-seok cleaned the penthouse, ran along the river at dawn, and rearranged his own bookshelf twice.
On the tenth day Si-woo brought him home.
"My flat," Si-woo said. "Ga-eul's cooking. You have to eat it."
"Is that an order?"
"It's a warning."
The one room smelled of garlic and sesame oil.
Ga-eul was at the stove in a yellow apron with her sleeves rolled.
She turned with a ladle in her hand and looked at Ji-seok.
He filled the doorway.
He had to duck under the paper lantern.
"You can sit on the floor," she said. "We have one chair and it's mine."
"Thank you for having me."
"Don't thank me. Eat."
He sat cross-legged on the floor with his knees nearly at his ears.
She put a bowl of dumpling soup in front of him that was bigger than his head.
He ate everything.
Then he ate a second bowl, and she watched him with her arms folded and the faintest tilt at her mouth.
"You're all right," she said at last.
"Thank you."
"Your cooking is bad, Si-woo says."
"It's improving."
"It's a cartoon bear apron. I know you wore it."
Ji-seok went red from his collar to his ears.
Si-woo laughed so hard that soup came out of his nose.
It was a good night.
They played cards on the floor, and Ga-eul cheated, and Ji-seok let her.
At eleven she put her hand on Si-woo's arm in the narrow kitchen and held it there, and said quietly, "You haven't told him."
