Chapter 17: Cold Room
Sub-Basement B3 was the coldest room Si-woo had ever stood in.
The medics took his phone at the door and left him his glasses and his cardigan.
"He'll want to keep warm," said the older one, without looking at him.
Si-woo kept his hands in his sleeves so nobody could see them shaking.
The corridor had white tile on every wall and a drain in the floor.
At the end of it a steel door opened onto a long ward.
Eight iron bed frames stood in a row.
Three of them had mattresses still on, standing upright against the wall.
In the middle of each mattress was a small round hole, black and clean.
"We keep them for reference," said Eom.
He had come up quietly behind Si-woo.
His voice was as warm as ever.
"It was more efficient to leave the beds as found. The families were told there was nothing to see."
Si-woo looked at the third mattress for a long time.
He did not say Ha-yun's name.
He said, "You put them in a bed afterward."
"Naturally. A body is not required to be a body for long."
"Is that what you tell yourself?"
"I do not tell myself anything, Mr. Nam. I keep ledgers."
He smiled gently and walked Si-woo to the end of the ward.
