Chapter 18: On His Knees
Ji-seok knelt.
He went down on the white tile in front of the cage.
Four guards and a Section Chief watched him do it.
His knees hit the floor so hard that Si-woo heard the bones.
Ji-seok put his hands open on his thighs.
He looked up at Si-woo through the lattice.
His face was wet, and there was nothing in it that Si-woo had not seen in the dark.
The whine of the frame sawed through Si-woo's teeth.
Somewhere behind Ji-seok a heavy door boomed open.
"What on earth," said the chair of the Board.
The Board had come down, all five, in their dark suits.
The doctor came with them, and a clerk, and a young man with a camera on his shoulder.
They stopped in a line at the edge of the round room.
The old woman who had voted for Si-woo had gone white to the lips.
Si-woo did not look at them.
He had one thing to look at.
"Reach through," he said.
Ji-seok did.
He put both his huge hands through the grey lattice and caught Si-woo's fingers where the straps ended.
Cold metal pressed his wrists, and Si-woo felt his pulse go off.
"Captain Cha," Eom said sharply. "That is enough. Stand up."
"Don't listen to him," Si-woo said. "Listen to me."
