Chapter 22: The Top Floor

The box held a pair of black leather cuffs, lined with fleece, and a strip of grey silk.

Si-woo tipped them out onto the bedsheet in the grey morning light and looked at Ji-seok.

Ji-seok was lying on his front with his face turned away.

The tips of his ears had gone red.

"You bought these," Si-woo said.

"Yes."

"For you."

"For you to use on me."

Ji-seok cleared his throat.

"I thought if I asked with a thing in my hands, you would know I meant it."

"You never have to bring a thing to ask."

"I know. I wanted to anyway."

Si-woo picked up the cuffs.

They were heavy and soft, with buckles of dull brass.

He buckled one around his own wrist to feel how it sat, and the fleece was warm against his pulse.

"Where?" he said.

"The roof."

Si-woo stopped.

"There's a door at the end of the stairwell," Ji-seok said into the pillow.

"I've lived here three years. I've never opened it."

"Why not?"

"Because I was afraid of how loud I would be."

The sun was only half up.

Ji-seok lifted his head and looked at Si-woo, and Si-woo saw what it cost him.

"I've been quiet since I was nineteen," Ji-seok said.

"In bed. In the road. Everywhere."

"I want to be loud once, up high, where nobody can say stop."

"I want you to make me."

Si-woo's mouth had gone dry.

"Tonight," he said.

"Tonight."

"Not a minute before."

Ji-seok smiled, with his eyes closed.
