Chapter 8: Banpo

Gate 14 opened over the Yeouido riverside at six in the morning, and by seven it had swallowed a bus.

Every team in the city was called.

Eom stood in the command tent with a headset on and a calm face, and sent Strike Team One in first.

"Guide in proximity," he said, and looked at Si-woo.

Si-woo did not look at Ji-seok.

He could feel Ji-seok looking at him.

They went in through a split in the pavement that breathed hot air, and the clearing took eleven hours.

There was a thing in the dark with too many arms, and it took four hunters to hold it down.

Ji-seok killed it with one stroke of his huge sword.

The strike went through his arms and burst out of his chest in a long gold howl.

It was the biggest flare Si-woo had ever seen.

It came up through Ji-seok like a flood through a cracked dam, and the three hunters beside him went down.

Si-woo ran.

There was no time for a stairwell, no time for a door.

He got to Ji-seok through falling rubble and put both arms around his waist from behind.

"Ji-seok. Ji-seok, I have you."

"Go," Ji-seok said through his teeth. "Si-woo, go, you can't..."

"I can."

Si-woo pressed his face between Ji-seok's shoulder blades and took it.

It hit him from every side at once.

It was fire in his lungs and fire in his blood, a roar he could feel in his teeth.
