Chapter 16: Ambush on the Road
A mile past the gate the road ran down between two steep banks of black rock.
Orrin had tied the black horse and Dumpling behind the wagon in the lane.
Aldric cut the horse loose and was in the saddle before I had finished saying his name.
"A cutting," said Orrin, riding up on the other side. "If I wanted an ambush, I would choose this."
He had chosen right.
A tree came down across the road forty yards ahead with a crack, and the banks lit up with torches.
Thirty riders came down the slope in grey cloaks with no badges.
Nobody had stitched a Marshal's crest on them, which told me everything about who had sent them.
"Finola, back!" I shouted.
"I'm trying, the mules are not enthusiastic!"
Biscuit planted her feet and screamed at the oncoming horses with her lips pulled back.
The first arrows went into the sacks.
The witch dragged the cat under a plank and held the stone against her chest.
Sabine yanked the reins out of Finola's hands.
"Give them to me."
"You are a Crane!"
"I drove a pony cart for ten years," Sabine snapped. "Hold the wagon level and get that shovel!"
