By morning the whole yard of Fort Karsk was hung with lanterns, and every wagon had a ribbon on its brake.
There were seven wagons.
Six were new, built by the fort's carpenters over a single night, with the lettering painted fresh on every board.
WAKEFIELD AND CLEARY. FORTY CROWNS A WAGON. NO HAGGLING.
"I added the last part," said Finola, who had paint to her elbows and a new coat that fit. "It seemed honest."
The seventh wagon was mine, scorched on one axle and patched on the canvas.
It stood at the front with Biscuit in the traces and a garland on her ears.
She had eaten one end of it already.
I wore my driver's coat, because I would not have known myself in anything else.
I wore a ribbon in my braid.
Finola had pinned it there.
"Don't touch it," she said.
"I'm not touching it."
"You were going to."
"I was going to adjust the mule."
"The mule is fine, Lyra. Go and be married."
I walked out across the yard through eleven hundred men in grey, who had cleaned their boots.
The cook had set the long tables in rows, and the iron pots steamed.
Somewhere a fiddle was playing something that had once been a battle hymn.
Aldric stood at the foot of the wagon with the scarred side of his face to the sun.
