He took it standing up.
"From where?" he said.
"From the beginning."
"The beginning was a comment under your first chapter."
"Then the beginning after that," I said. "You've never once asked me to dinner. You ordered a wedding."
He looked down Passyunk at the brass band, at the café tables, at the kid with the cannoli still filming us.
"Sunday," he said. "Nonna's. Four o'clock."
"That's not asking. That's Nonna."
"It's the only table I know how to set." His mouth moved under the beard. "Will you come?"
"Since you asked," I said.
On Sunday the eighteenth the long kitchen in Chestnut Hill was louder than a wedding.
The old man with the cane came with his wife.
She brought a tray of stuffed peppers and didn't ask anyone's permission to put them down.
The baker came with his wife and a box of sfogliatelle.
The young capo came alone, with his chain tucked in and his hair combed, and kissed Nonna's hand.
Rosalba had made place cards.
There was no card for Raimondo.
There was no chair either.
