nightshift: "Couldn't put it down. Who taught you about blow-dryers?"

I turned my head on the pillow.

He was lying right beside me, propped on one elbow, with his reading glasses on and his phone glowing in his hand.

He didn't even pretend.

"You were supposed to be asleep," I said.

"I never am. You know that."

"You read it on our wedding night."

"I read it twice. You were snoring."

"I don't snore."

"You do now," he said. "Little ones. Like Nonna's cat."

I typed my answer under his comment, with the screen dimmed so I wouldn't wake the house.

A moment later the phone buzzed again.

rosiereads: "SECOND READER THIS TIME. LU, I SAW THAT. GO TO SLEEP."

He laughed so hard he had to put his face in the pillow.

Three weeks later, on the first Saturday in June, Rosalba graduated.

The hall was huge and hot, and Nonna screamed her name so loud when she crossed the stage that the dean looked up.

Luciano didn't scream.

He stood up in the middle of the row with his glasses on, in public, and clapped until his hands went red.
