Chapter 7: The Ledger

Rhett tapped the notice with one finger as he walked past me.

"Context," he said.

I didn't answer him.

I went downstairs and got out the black notebook.

It was plain, the kind you buy at a drugstore, with a black cover and an elastic band.

The Moon Priestess had put it in my hands four days before I came south.

"Every wrong done to your lowest self," she'd said. "In ink. On the thirtieth night you read it to their faces, and they answer for each line. If you lie in it, the vow breaks."

So I didn't lie in it.

I sat on my bunk with the pipes knocking and wrote.

Day 4. Lark Bexley, omega, locked in the ice house four hours in wet sawdust. Rhett Hagan said he would do it, on tape. The board suspended her. The board was chaired by Peyton Daltrey's father.

Above it, from two days before: Day 3. Peyton Daltrey poured out three coffees and tipped her lunch into my bag.

Lark came home from the infirmary that night wrapped in two blankets.

She was pale and sulky and alive.

"Two weeks," she said, sitting on my bunk. "No classes. No anatomy quiz. I studied for that quiz, Mercy. I learned the hamate."

"You did. I heard."

"I'm going to fail the year. Over a padlock."

"You're not going to fail the year."

The twins had made a cake.

It was a box mix, baked in the dorm's one oven, and it had sunk in the middle.

They'd filled the hole with frosting and written LARK LIVES on it in sprinkles.

The tall boy from the bunk by the door played a song on his phone and pretended it was a band.

The cook came down with a pot of chili and a stack of bowls and stood at the end of the room with her arms crossed.
