Chapter 8: War Room

I stood at the top of the stairs with the receipt in my hand.

"Where did you get this?"

"The supplier owes the Beta a favor," Garrick said. "Everybody here owes the Beta a favor. Except your coach."

"He's not my coach."

"Mercy." He put his hand on my shoulder. "You can't fight him with the ring on. If he comes at you with silver, you either shift or die. Either way, the forty-nine are gone. Go home."

I shook his hand off.

"Thank you for the file."

He sighed.

Then he went down the stairs and out into the rain.

I stood there a long time.

I'd liked the way Cade laughed on the mat.

I'd liked the way he carried Lark.

That was no reason to believe him.

So I'd look.

The combat office was on the second floor of the gym, over the mat room.

At nine that night the gym was dark.

The office door had an old brass lock, the kind you can open with a bobby pin and some patience.

I had both.

It took four minutes.

Inside, the office smelled like him. Cedar, coffee, rain on canvas.

It was small and plain.

A desk. Two chairs. A shelf of binders. A cot in the corner with a gray blanket folded on it.

On the wall hung a big paper map of the Madrone Ridge territory.

Red pins ran along the eastern border, where the ridge drops into the national forest.

Next to each pin, a date in his handwriting, and a word.

Rogue. Rogue. Rogue.

Next to three of them, a second word.

Omega.

I counted the dates.
