Chapter 13: The Fever

Elowen's POV

The fever started before the moon-field had emptied.

By midnight I was on the guest-room floor with my cheek on the cold boards, shaking so hard my teeth clicked.

"It's the silver leaving," the herbwife said from the door. "Six years of it. The wolf is fighting its way up, and your body is paying for the road."

"How long?" I said.

"Until it's done."

That was all the herbwife would promise, and she left a jug of bitter tea and went to see to Fenn.

Dashiell lifted me off the floor and put me in the bed.

He did not ask. He took the blanket off me when I burned and put it back when I froze, and he did it all night.

Around three, Fenn came in, limping, with half his face in bandage and a pot of broth.

"You look terrible," he said.

"You look worse."

"I'm not the one sweating through the Alpha's good sheets." He set the pot down. "I can smell it coming off you, you know. Metal. It's pouring out of your skin."

"Is that supposed to help?"

"It means it's leaving." He wiped his eyes with his bandaged wrist and said roughly, "Drink the soup, Elowen."

I drank the soup.

He sat by the window until I fell asleep, and when I woke he was still there, snoring, with his boots on the radiator.

The silver marks came and went all day.

They lit up my left arm during the worst of it and sank back under the skin when the cramps let go.

Every time they lit, something under my ribs turned over, heavy and slow.

Dashiell never left the room.

At noon he sat on the edge of the bed with a wet cloth and said, "You haven't said my name since the field."

"I've been busy dying."

"You're not dying." His hand shook very slightly on the cloth. "I would know."
