Chapter 15: Midnight on the Deck

Reeve's POV

The tub sat at the far end of the back deck, a cedar barrel with a wood stove built into its side.

I had fed it since four in the afternoon.

By eleven the water was a hundred and four, and the steam stood straight up in the cold.

The deck was behind the house, past the corner where the porch camera could see.

I had picked the spot in October, for no reason I would admit then.

Page came out in a towel and her boots and nothing else.

She dropped the towel on the rail and climbed the cedar steps in the lantern light.

I stopped breathing.

"Don't stare," she said.

"I'm going to stare."

"Then stare from the water."

I was already in it, to my chest, with my back against the staves.
