Chapter 10: What He Should Have Said
Dustin read the text twice.
Then he put the phone face down and looked at Barrett.
"You asked the hospital for her file."
"I was worried about her."
"At nine this morning. Before you walked in here and told me she was nine weeks along."
Barrett's smile stayed in place.
"The doctor mentioned it at the hospital. I assumed you'd been told."
"The doctor wouldn't tell me her blood type," Dustin said. "He wasn't going to tell you."
Joelle spoke from beside him, her voice flat. "I never told you nine weeks, Barrett. You said I told you in my sleep. I didn't sleep and I didn't say it. You went into my file."
"Jo, you're upset."
"Give Dustin the key."
Barrett stared at her.
"Now."
His hand went to his pocket.
He took out the key ring, worked the townhouse key off it, and set it on the counter with a click.
"You're making a mistake," he told Dustin quietly. "Thirteen years, and you're taking her side."
"I'm not taking a side. I'm asking you to leave my house."
"Dustin," Dolores said. "That girl is trying to trap you."
"Mother, go with him."
"I will not."
"Then wait on the porch."
Dolores looked from her son to Joelle, then at the key on the counter.
She turned, with her back very straight, and walked out.
Barrett lingered in the doorway.
His eyes met Joelle's for one second, and there was nothing friendly in them.
"You'll regret this," he said, and the door shut behind him.
The kitchen went silent.
The tea on the island had gone cold.
