Chapter 7: Who Is Kendra Moss
"Joelle!"
Dustin pushed through the lobby doors in time to see her taillights pull out of the lot.
Barrett stood on the curb with his hands in his pockets.
"She's exhausted. Let her go."
"You had her phone."
"She handed it to me to hold while she got her wrap."
"I called her four times."
"It's been a hard night for her, Dustin." Barrett's tone was patient. "Don't chase her. You'll make it worse."
Dustin looked at him.
Twenty years of friendship, and this was the first time he'd had to decide whether Barrett was telling the truth.
"Go back in," he said. "Cover for me with my mother."
"Where are you going?"
"Home."
He drove across the river with the radio off.
The townhouse had one light on, in the kitchen.
He rang the bell.
The door opened and Joelle stood there in her green dress with her shoes in her hand.
Her eyes were red.
"I'm not going to apologize for what I said to your mother."
"I didn't come for that."
"Then why?"
"Because I watched you walk out of that room with your hand on your stomach, and I haven't been able to breathe since."
She stepped back.
He took it for permission and came in.
The hall smelled of tea and the cardboard boxes she'd stacked against the wall.
"Dustin, there's nothing to say. You're leaving on Friday with Kendra Moss. I hope you're happy."
He stopped.
"With who?"
"Don't." Her voice shook. "I'm not stupid. I saw the booking. Two seats, first class, her name and yours. Barrett told me you've been seeing her since March."
