Chapter 30: Sunday Supper
By March I'd stopped reading about us.
The city had found somebody else to talk about.
The trial was set for the fall.
Randall was out on bail and living in a motel near the airport.
The house in Penn Hills was being sold, and the lot was locked behind a chain.
I'd heard he still wore the polo shirts.
I didn't go look.
On Thursday I took my first practical exam at the culinary institute.
Twelve students in white jackets at twelve steel stations.
A chef instructor with a clipboard and a face.
"French omelet," she said. "No color. Rolled. You have four minutes. Begin."
Half the class had never worked a line.
I'd been making eggs for drunks on Carson Street since I was nineteen.
I rolled it in two minutes and forty seconds.
She cut it open with a fork, looked at the inside, and wrote something down.
"Where did you train?"
"A diner," I said.
She looked at me a long moment.
"It shows," she said, and moved on, and I didn't know until Monday that it was the highest mark in the room.
