Chapter 15: Dee's Warning
Lucas made Dee a cup of tea, put it in her hands, and left the room.
"I'll be in the kitchen," he said.
"I won't be listening."
"He'll be listening," I told her.
"He's very bad at nothing."
Dee almost smiled.
It was the first time in weeks I'd seen her try, and it hurt more than the crying.
She sat on the edge of the long couch in her coat with the tea going cold, and I took the armchair across from her.
I did not sit beside her.
"Say it," I said.
"Say what you came to say."
"Trent isn't the one who'll hurt me," she said.
"Chad is."
"I heard him on the phone in our hallway on Thursday, before he fired Trent."
"He thought the apartment was empty."
"What did he say?"
"He said there'd be a photographer on the lake by Saturday."
"He said, 'They'll go there the minute they're frightened, and when they do, I'll have my pictures.'"
"A lake?"
"Lucas's house in Door County."
"Trent told him about it in March, when they were drinking."
"He's the one who knows where everything is."
She pulled the coat tighter.
"Chad said the photos would go to the same paper as the one from Las Vegas."
"He said that by Monday morning you'd be the girl who got bought, and Lucas would be the playboy who bought her, and the board would never bother to look at a license."
"He wants an emergency vote before Lucas's birthday."
"He told Trent the vote was already counted."
I sat very still.
A photographer, a headline, a vote.
It was clean and ugly, and I recognized it, because it was exactly what I'd have built.
