Chapter 6: Not In The Contract
Ollie drove us home at nine, and neither of us said a word in the car.
Our hands sat side by side on the seat, an inch apart, for twenty-two blocks.
I counted.
In the loft I washed up, laid out my supplies and said, "Shirt."
Jude pulled it off over his head.
His temperature was 98.9.
I cleaned the wound, packed it and taped it with steady hands.
I'd done this for four years, and my hands knew their job.
My mouth did not know its job at all.
"Done," I said.
"Thank you."
I peeled off my gloves.
I dropped them in the bin.
I turned around.
"Jude."
He was sitting on the edge of the bed with his shirt in his hand, watching me.
"What is it?"
"I'm going to say something, and I want you to hear every word."
"I'm listening."
"What happened in the stairwell was not the contract. The money is paid. My father's heart is fixed."
"You told me on day one that I could walk out and keep everything. I believe you now."
His face didn't change, but his hand tightened on the shirt.
"So when I say this," I said, "it has nothing to do with a debt."
"Sabine."
"I want you."
The words dropped into the room.
I'd thought I'd feel foolish.
I felt I'd been holding my breath for a week.
"I want you in this bed, tonight, with the lights on. I want it to be my idea, because it is."
He stood.
He crossed the room in two steps, and he took my face in both hands, and for a second he only looked at me.
"Tell me again," he said, and his voice was rough.
"I want you."
"Louder."
"I want you, Jude Kane."
He kissed me.
It was nothing like the stairwell.
That one had been a question.
This was the answer, deep and hungry, and I went up on my toes and grabbed his belt to keep from falling.
He walked me backward until my knees hit the mattress.
"Careful," I said against his mouth. "Your chest."
"I don't care about my chest."
"I do."
I pushed his shoulders until he lay back among the pillows, long and huge across the bed.
"You're going to lie there. I'll tell you when to move."
His eyes went dark.
"Yes, ma'am."
"Don't call me that."
"What should I call you?"
"Sabine."
"Sabine," he said, like a man testing a lock.
