Chapter 5: Slowly, and With Your Eyes on Me

The investor from Boston put down his fork and asked Quentin to explain the Denver losses in front of the whole table.

I sat at the far end of the table with a leather notebook in my lap and a glass of sparkling water.

Merrick Elliston sat across from me, pleasant and relaxed, passing the bread.

He had said nothing about the elevator since Tuesday.

That worried me more than if he had.

"Denver is losing money because three of its floors are closed for the sprinklers," Quentin said. "They reopen in January. The numbers in the packet you were sent were from December."

"The packet we were sent," the investor said, "was last week's."

Nobody moved.

I watched Quentin's face.

It didn't change at all.

"Then someone sent you the wrong packet," he said.

He turned his head, very slightly, toward me.

"Ms. Doyle prepared the final copy. She doesn't make mistakes."

The investor looked at me down the table.

"She seems very young for that."

"She's thorough," Quentin said. "When I give her an instruction, she does it slowly and completely, and she doesn't stop until I tell her she can."

The room was quiet.

Somebody coughed.

My face was burning.

I picked up my water glass, and my hand wasn't quite steady.

Across from me, Merrick lifted his eyebrows at his plate and smiled at nothing.

"Slowly," the investor said, and chuckled. "I could use an assistant like that."
