"Where were they going?" I said. "Did she say where?"
"She said something about the ferry. An ice cream on the island. Ms. Ellison, I'm so sorry, she had your daughter's name and..."
I put the phone down on the counter with the counselor still talking.
I ran.
Through the dining room. Through the lobby. Past the fish tank and the picture over it.
Lawrence was on the porch with the man who was fixing the steps.
He saw my face and dropped the board he was holding.
"Your mother has Poppy."
He didn't ask a single question.
His truck was parked at the foot of the porch.
We were in it before the board stopped rolling.
He drove down Front Street faster than anyone has ever driven down Front Street.
The ferry landing was at the far end of the harbor, past the co-op and the fuel dock.
The island boat ran four times a day.
The noon one was in.
I could see it from the hill, white and squat, its ramp already down.
A line of cars waited to drive on.
Beside them, a line of people on foot, with bikes and coolers and dogs.
